If you had the opportunity to live in the capital of another country, where would you want it to be? Did you think of Harare Zimbabwe? Probably not. Harare has the dubious distinction of being the world’s least liveable city*.

The average American expects to live about 80 years. Can you imagine having a life expectancy of just half of that? Diseases such as HIV/AIDS and Cholera ave devastated the people of Zimbabwe. Meanwhile, unemployment recently reached as high as 90%! Over half of the people there face tarvation every single day.

Lights, Camera, Compassion!

Limousines and lights, gawkers and stars all fill the streets of Hollywood on the night of the Academy Awards. But while Oscar is getting his close-up, a family down the street is struggling to survive.

Kim, a trained volunteer from a small local church called The Hollywood Church, has been visiting Erica and her family for several months. Every other week, Kim brings one of CHF’s Food Pak® boxes to Erica’s door to help feed the family and to nurture their growing relationship.
Erica, her husband Luis, and their three children live in a studio apartment. He is a construction worker and hasn’t had steady work for many months. He has had to take day labor jobs in order to feed his family. Erica uses her skills as well to bring in money by making and selling tamales for family and church events. However, the money never seems to be enough.

San Antonio and surrounding areas have the highest rate in the nation for poverty and food insecurity.

In Bexar County, the rate of poverty is 23.5%. That means that 1 in 4 children under the age of 18 may not know where their meals will come from, and most of the time these children have only one meal a day, often from a school lunch program.
