| Speaking the Language of Love |

“Do you know where the bread line is?” the young, pregnant woman asked. She was lost and looking for a social services organization. The church volunteers looked at one another in shock. They had just finished praying that God would direct them to those He wants them to serve. This was their first day of Food Pak® deliveries to needy families as part of CHF’s Chicago Mercy Network. The woman gratefully received the food they gave and directed them to her South Chicago neighborhood where more mothers like her could use similar help. The church volunteers followed her to a Hispanic community nestled right in the middle of several primarily African American communities. Don, the ministry leader, an African American himself, was excited that God would provide this opportunity to bridge the racial boundaries common in needy communities by showing compassion to families there.“There’s one problem,” Don revealed. “I don’t speak Spanish, and nobody on my team does either.” They brought Food Paks® anyway hoping that their compassion would speak for them. Then they met Sylvia.
![]() Sylvia, a single mother of 7, desperately needed the Food Pak® that the team delivered to her door. This opportunity to serve her needs cleared the way for the church to build a deeper relationship with her. As the weeks passed, the church supported her in prayer as she sought out more affordable housing. They provided some household items, a washer and dryer, and winter coats for all of her children. “God is so good to me!” she told us. Now, Sylvia is a vital part of the ministry to the poor in her community. Because of the love she received, she happily provides Spanish translation for Don’s team so they can serve more families like hers. Sylvia’s gratitude shows itself in other ways too. Don and his team have now enjoyed their first of many authentic Mexican meals. |
