How much can one child do to help the poor? Quite a bit actually. One small sacrificial act, one selfless deed, one life lived to help the helpless can have an impact and could even resonate throughout the world.

In a culture that aggressively competes for the attention of its teenagers, it is rare to find one who refuses to be distracted. Samantha Neher, a faithful CHF volunteer, says she does not want to waste her teen years on things that do not matter. Instead, she chooses to focus her energy on projects that will ultimately improve the lives and futures of children who cannot choose it for themselves.

When her mother convinced her that she “needed” to have a sweet-sixteen birthday party, Sam decided to use it to serve others. She encouraged her friends not to bring gifts, but to bring food and other donations for Children’s Hunger Fund so that her gifts could go to children who really need them. Sam acknowledges her contribution is small, but she knows that it will have a big impact in the lives of the children she serves.

Because of her heart to serve in any way, and her desire to recruit others to participate in acts of compassion, we chose to honor Samantha at our Celebration Banquet last month with a special award – The Widow’s Mite Award.
